California Academy of Sciences Opening

My department and I went to a mixer at the newly renovated California Academy of Science hosted by the SF Convention & Visitor's Bureau. There were drinks, food, and we got to meet most of the people in the industry that we work with, now putting faces with the names and voices. It was fun because we got to see all the new exhibits, including the Philippine Coral Reef, but there was really nothing "Philippines" about it. They could've called it "Hawaiian Coral Reef" and I wouldn't have known the difference. It was huge, but pretty. There were fishes and stingrays (and I saw one that was bullying one of the other fishes) and all sorts of sea anemones and such.

I went all over trying to look for where they put my giant sea bass. It's the fish that's as big as a dog. I mean HUGE! But he's so calm and there's something hypnotizing about the way he swims around. He was my fave when they were at their temporary home on Howard Street. His tank is a lot bigger now, but he's still sharing with that big eel. I love that Sea Bass. None of the information say how old he is, but apparently they live up to over 100 years old!

What was exciting was the fact that we were THE FIRST to see this new attraction. It officially opens to the public on Saturday the 27th. They had commercials about visiting the Academy to "be the first to see the new exhibits and displays, and see the Planetarium..." but we can say that WE were the first to see them, the first to sit on the new Planetarium chairs (which by the way had a new-car-smell to them) and the first to "drink with the fishes".

They will reinstate the "Night Life" where you get to have cocktails in the Academy while looking at the fishes and penguins and alligator and all that, but not until February of '09. Can't wait!

Afterwards, Lee and I ate at this Korean BBQ place where you grill the food at your table. It was good, kinda expensive, and then you go home with that "kitchen" smell. Korean food is yummy!
