I always take the side roads because the main road, Embarcadero, is always traffic. On weekends, the route I take barely has any cars because most cars are on the Embarcadero. Mostly tourists, since that's probably what their navigators are telling them, so the Embarcadero is always jam packed while the side roads are almost empty.
Anyway, so the lights are pretty timed so that you hit all green lights once you start from a certain street (Market St). I was going, going, seeing my green lights on the next few blocks, and right there, at the corner of Beale and Howard, I see a big black Chevy Tahoe coming right at me from the right! I honked and tried to swerve a little to the left, hoping he had enough time to step on his brake, but unfortunately, he smashed right into my passenger side! He just completely ran a red light. It wasn't even a yellow light on his side, my light was already green for a while so that had been a red light on their side the whole time.
My windows were rolled down because it was a warm day, so when they hit the door, the rear window shattered. He hit me so hard that my car spun around and faced oncoming traffic. A lady from another car stopped near me and asked if I was ok. I yelled to her that I was fine, and after seeing me get out of the car, she slowly took off. I immediately called 911 to see if I can get an officer to come down and do a report, but the dispatcher told me that since it was a non-injury accident, we should just exchange info. So the other driver and his wife came to me and asked if I was ok. They didn't explain WHY they ran a red light, and it was pretty obvious. They were tourists, from Oregon, who didn't know the streets of SF. Probably didn't see the light.
They seemed pretty nice, and had it been a different scenario, I could see myself being cool with them. The guy said he was glad I had insurance, because that would've been awful hard if I didn't. Yeah yeah yeah, you're paying for my car homie! After doing all that, they left, and I got back in the car and attempted to drive. Well, the rear passenger door was so smashed that it was scraping against the wheel. I parked on the side, and called roadside assistance. After a long phone call, I called Lee to come get me since it seems I'd have to leave the car at the shop this same day. I called Insurance Claims, and got everything else taken care of. One thing I have to say is that Liberty Mutual people are very helpful and friendly! Made everything easy and smooth...
The claims lady, Kelly, said from what it sounded like, my car may be considered totalled. Oh no! I love my car! We've been together for 8 years, and I wasn't ready to let it go yet! That's what Almira said too. The tow truck guy said the same thing. When the tow truck got there, I grabbed everything I had in that car. I'll get a call on Monday to confirm. My little car had no chance against a Chevy Tahoe. Like Kelly said, unfair fight. Time to say goodbye...
Of course, I'm still thankful for many things. I thank the Lord that:
It sucks though, because I just filled that car up a few days ago (that's $30 I won't get to use), I just got my smog check (that's $45 there), I just mailed the forms needed to get the title (we never received it)... At least I haven't done the oil change yet, which I was gonna do this Monday! Saved me $35.
I will miss my Toyota. We've been through a lot together. It was better than a boyfriend!
